On Sunday the 19 September 2010, the countrywide “Geotope Day” takes place once again. The fact that the Bodenmaiser landmark Silberberg ranges among the 77 most beautiful geotopes in Germany, as well as belonging to the top 100 in Bavaria, makes it an ideal day to introduce this local geotope to both visitors and locals alike.
Martin Schreiner, the director of the historic show mine, offers two very special guide tours free of charge at 10:00 and at 14:00. Both tours, each lasting two hours, will include interesting information about the Silberberg and the reason why it counts to being one of the most beautiful geotopes. The meeting point for the walks is the Silberberg lower station.
Silberberg belongs to one of the most well known geological places of interest, due to the fact that there is much evidence of historical mining activities from superficial and underground mining. In 2004 it was officially distinguished as one of the most beautiful geotopes in Bavaria by Wolfgang Lazik, head of the ministry of the environment, and accordingly awarded the seal of approval.
Silberberg is one of the most well known geological places of interest in the Bavarian Forest, due to the fact that there is much evidence of historical mining activities. It is here that silver bearing ore was excavated since 15 century. The old tunnels are open to the public because of the show mine.
The Silberberg consists of sandy clay oceanic deposits and ore alluvium that originated over 900 million years ago, that were literally “quashed“ during the following orogenesis. It was forged deep below the earth surface with high pressure and temperature conditions to the Archean rock and ore material that we know today. This so-called “metamorphose“ of over-stamping reoccurred between very long periods of time, the last of which ended about 275 million years ago.
The Silberberg info panel that describes one of the most eminent geotopes is situated above the entrance to the show mine.
So take a note: “Geotope Day” 19 September, guide tours 10:00 and 14:00 free of charge, meeting point is the Silberberg lower station!
