The Maypole in Bodenmais – an old tradition.
The Maypole belongs to the country districts of Bavaria like the Pope in the Vatican. Naturally the Bodenmaiser want to carry on with this tradition, then the Maypole custom goes back to primeval times as a form of “occult pole”, however the meaning has changed over the past centuries. Since the 19th century the Maypole is a symbol representing the high esteem of every village and its social ties.
On Sunday the 1st of May at 14.00, the old tradition of hoisting the Maypole takes place once again this year in the center of town. And of course a festive procession accompanied with music is part of the occasion. The procession begins at the little grave yard chapel at 13:45. All the strong lads from Bodenmais will give a helping hand. With the so-called “Schwalben” (wooden supports) the pole will be heaved with pure muscle power in to the vertical position and then anchored. Of course the appropriate musical accompaniment along with food and beverages will be catered for.
All guests and locals are cordially invited to come and welcome the spring and join in on the celebrations.
