Glistening snow crunches under your skis, the white sugared trees glisten against the blue sky in the bright sunshine. Swing by swing, the cross-country skiers push their way through the incomparable winter landscape on the Bretterschachten. The king of the Bavarian Forest, the 1456-metre-high Großer Arber, stands guard in the background. Around almost every bend, a new panoramic view of the Bavarian Forest opens up. Down in the valley, in Bodenmais, the white splendor shimmers in the sunlight. The cross-country skiing area at the Bretterschachten activity center above Bodenmais is one of the most important in the whole of Central Europe.

The Bretterschachten activity center high above Bodenmais is one of the most snow-sure cross-country skiing areas in the whole of Central Europe. The favorable altitude between 1100 and 1300 meters above sea level guarantees a reliable natural snow cover even in times when more and more ski regions are struggling with a lack of snow. The white splendor reliably covers the high forests and forest roads as early as December, but no later than the beginning of January. In January, 114 kilometers of cross-country trails are usually almost guaranteed - skating and classic in parallel. From the short beginners' circuit around the stadium
to Bavaria's longest high-altitude trail, there is something for every taste and level.

Bavaria's longest high-altitude trail

Cross-country skiing on Bavaria's longest high-altitude trail is a special experience. The 30-kilometre Auerhahn trail from the Bretterschachten activity center to the Eck runs below the Großer Arber, with constant gentle ups and downs and the opportunity to stop for refreshments halfway in the Schareben mountain hut deep in the forest.
Changing rooms, toilets and a cozy cross-country ski trail snack bar are available to all cross-country skiers directly at the activity center.
