Glittering snow crunches underfoot, the snow-covered trees glisten against the blue sky in the bright sunshine. Turn after turn, cross-country skiers glide through the incomparable winter landscape on the Bretterschachten. In the background stands the king of the Bavarian Forest, the 1,456-meter-high Großer Arber.
Recreation center Bretterschachten
The Bretterschachten activity center high above Bodenmais is one of the most snow-sure cross-country skiing areas in all of Central Europe, thanks to its altitude between 1,100 and 1,300 meters above sea level. In January, 114 kilometers of trails are usually almost guaranteed – for both skating and classic skiing. From the short beginner's loop around the stadium to Bavaria's longest high-altitude trail, the Auerhahn Trail, there is something for every taste and requirement here.
Moments of happiness on the cross-country ski trail
Classic & Skating
There are two cozy places to stop for refreshments right in the extensive network of cross-country trails: the Chamer Hütte and the Berghütte Schareben. Whether you're looking for a quick snack on the go, a well-deserved reward, or the destination of an enjoyable cross-country skiing tour, both huts offer just the right thing for a relaxing break.
A special highlight: on Wednesday evenings, the Chamer Hütte regularly hosts a regulars' table – perfect for anyone who wants to end the day on the cross-country ski trail in a cozy atmosphere.
